So, we challenged ourselves to transform a well-loved childhood sweet in the same way - and Chocolate Puffs were born! Inspired by crunchy malt balls, our Chocolate Puffs start with a core of puffed quinoa, just like our savory Quinoa Puffs. Then, we drench them in rich, organic dark chocolate that's Fair Trade and vegan, too!
The final piece of the chocolate snack puzzle was the glaze. You might not think too much about how chocolate-coated snacks get so shiny, but if you look at the ingredients you're likely to find something called "confectioner's glaze" on the list. The truth is, confectioner's glaze (sometimes also called natural glaze or pure food glaze) is another name for Lac-resin - a secretion that comes from the female Lac insect.
Yep, you read that correctly - a disturbing amount of conventional candies are made with beetle juice! We knew we couldn't possibly coat our beautiful dark chocolate in bug goo, so we worked diligently to come up with a plant-based glaze that is not only vegan, but it's also Non-GMO Project verified. We're mighty proud, and we hope you'll appreciate the effort.
